EduCon’s provocative program gathered almost 1,000 business events professionals from more than 15 countries for the 2019 PCMA EduCon at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live. Hundreds more joined the live stream to make a difference, gain valuable insights and hear from constructive speakers.
Hosted by Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board, the June 25-28 event began with a reception at The Novo featuring the R&B group En Vogue. To wrap things up, Rock and Roll Team Building founder and former INXS lead singer, Ciaran Gribbin, led attendees in a collaborative song-writing exercise. Throughout the week, participants had the opportunity to hear from influential guests like Grammy-nominated songwriter, John Ondrasik and WNBA champion and Olympic gold medalist, Tamika Catchings.
“We carried the ‘Disrupt + Deliver’ theme introduced in January at Convening Leaders to EduCon as business events participants continue to seek unique experiences and innovations to help them with their respective audiences and sectors,” says Sherrif Karamat, PCMA president and CEO. “PCMA continues to challenge the status quo in our event design, research and engagement platforms so our community can learn, challenge and gain greater insights, and we received a positive response in the largest turnout ever for EduCon.”
In keeping with EduCon’s goal to offer practical solutions and create engaging learning experiences, it broke content into four studios that catered to different learning styles. The four studios, Collaboration, Deep Dive, Fresh Look and True Stories, each offered unique sessions, speakers and “after-chat” debriefs in which participants could continue the conversation.
“[EduCon’s design helps] me with my relationships with colleagues, clients and suppliers. It offers me the opportunity to engage more actively in the sessions I attend,” says Annette Suriani, CMP, chief marketing strategist for AMS Meetings Solutions.
Encouraged to pay-it-forward, participants helped the business events industry develop solutions for homelessness in a “Hackathon” competition. Opportunities to assemble toiletry kits for local homeless women, participate in a 5K Fun Run, PCMA Yoga or the Give Back Bash, kept attendees busy. Proceeds from these 2019 EduCon’s social impact events went to Downtown Women’s Center in Los Angeles, Skid Row Running Club and PCMA Foundation’s initiatives for the business events industry.
