  • Monterey Tides Completes Renovation

In 2015, Joie de Vivre Hotels embarked on a $12 million renovation and repositioning of the beachfront property of what is now Monterey Tides in Monterey Bay, Calif. The hotel was transformed with colors, adobe texture and modern comforts, creating a coastal aesthetic.

As Monterey Bay’s only beachfront hotel, there are many seaside views. Grays, blues and pops of color were used in all public spaces, including the lobby, pool area and Bar Sebastian, and guestrooms.

“The goal of the renovation was to elevate the guest experience but also entice locals to rediscover our property,” said Brent McNally, general manager, Monterey Tides. “Joie de Vivre has operated boutique hotels throughout California for 30 years, and we are excited to be a part of this native-California brand.” 

Guests are greeted by a view of the Pacific Ocean. Floor-to-ceiling windows capture this view with seating vignettes throughout the lobby to create comfortable, casual spaces for guests. A fireplace in the lobby creates a warm and cozy atmosphere.

Bar Sebastian, on the other side of the lobby, provides service to guests seated throughout the public space or in the bar. Bar Sebastian was inspired by Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino who discovered Monterey Bay in the early 1600s. The design reflects both the California coastal feel, and the heritage and culture of the area incorporating nautical accents. 

The culinary concept for Bar Sebastian was inspired by executive chef Jose Velasquez and his desire to infuse his Mexican roots with Spanish Tapas. Chef Velasquez researched ancestral recipes of the Mayas and Aztecs to develop a menu that incorporates fresh ingredients. Popular selections include Mole Spiced Chicken Wings, Spanish Seared Scallops, Tuna Tostadas and 12-Hour Braised Pork Belly. The handcrafted cocktails at Bar Sebastian include the Pomegranate Mojito, Strawberry Basil Smash and Manzana-Rita. 

Nature’s “sleep machine” lulls guests to sleep at Monterey Tides, with the sound of waves in all rooms. The guestrooms create the feel of the ocean with blue walls and a wave-like carpet design. Furniture with colorful accents adds vibrancy to each room. Picture windows provide guests with either garden or ocean views.

The year-round pool at Monterey Tides was renovated and now features a new pool deck and wood siding. Recently added lounge chairs and patio furniture reflect the blue accents found throughout the property. Opposite the pool comfortable seating areas were added on the deck overlooking the ocean. Ocean view patios have transformed the beachside deck into a new atmosphere with outdoor couches, lounge chairs and fire pits. The décor of these public areas offers a refreshing pop of color.

Additional property enhancements are planned with meeting space renovations in the near future. Café Beach, the hotel’s signature restaurant, is getting a new name and menu in late March 2017 but will remain open during the transition. 

Pebble Beach Resorts has welcomed IBM to its family of brand partners, as its new Official Cognitive Solutions Provider.

As part of this collaboration, the two companies have launched a new Pebble Beach app, aiming to enhance the way Pebble Beach Resorts guests experience 17-Mile Drive, shopping, dining and more.
