To those who've only seen it on a map, Lake Tahoe is an intriguing blob straddling the California/Nevada state line. Insiders know, however, that “Big Blue”—America’s largest alpine lake at 22 miles long and 12 miles wide—is a place of multiple moods and faces. Yes, the Nevada side has gambling. But regular visitors orient themselves instead in terms of North Shore (accessed by Interstate 80) and South Shore (on the Highway 50 corridor).
