Signature Drink- Sangria

By Kathy A. McDonald

Steps from Disneyland and the Disney California Adventure theme parks, Spanish and Mediterranean-influenced Catal Restaurant and its outdoor Uva Bar (both from Patina Restaurant Group) sit at the center of the Downtown Disney entertainment district. The pedestrian-only outdoor promenade is also less than a mile from the largest convention center on the West Coast, the 1.6 million-square-foot Anaheim Convention Center.

Catal’s housemade sangria is a welcome option at events held upstairs in the restaurant’s dining rooms overlooking lively Downtown Disney. Light and fruity, the signature wine punch makes for a festive, tray-passed arrival drink. Garnish with fresh fruit of the season-summer’s stone fruits work nicely-for a kicky but not too strong aperitif.

INGREDIENTS:
2 bottles dry red wine (cabernet sauvignon or merlot)
1 cup ruby port
1 cup orange liqueur
Juice from 1 orange
Juice from 2 lemons
1 cup cranberry juice cocktail
2 cups club soda (or lemon-lime soda for a sweeter taste)
Chopped or sliced fresh fruit sections: Grapes, berries, sliced oranges, lemons and peaches- whatever’s in season or suits the maker’s preference!

CREATE:
Mix all ingredients in a large jar or pitcher.
Chill overnight.
Serve over ice in a large wine glass with an orange wheel and cherry or other fruit as garnish.

Recipe makes approximately 13 6-ounce glasses of sangria.
