Kathleen Schaffer is the fiery force behind some of LA’s most memorable events.
Los Angeles experienced only partial darkness during the Great American Solar Eclipse. Still, the city celebrated with its usual festive community spirit. There were free viewing parties at the Griffith Observatory and the Glendale Community College Planetarium, at the physics and astronomy centers of UCLA, Cal State Long Beach and the University of California at Riverside. National Park Services Rangers led hikes at the LA State Historic Park in Downtown LA and at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas. The Big Bear Valley Astronomical Society set up telescopes at Swim Beach.
Opening in August 2017, the San Francisco Proper Hotel is transforming a flatiron hotel building into a luxury lifestyle hotel on the corner of 7th and Market. With San Francisco as its muse, the hotel helps resurge the area with its design as a culturally connected hangout in the up-and-coming rebuild of the neighborhood.
Both Luxe Hotels in Los Angeles offer two completely different experiences. The Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel is the only hotel on Rodeo Drive, with easy access to dozens of designer stores, while the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel has some of the best pool facilities on LA’s Westside.
Now, the two are teaming up to bring Rodeo Drive to the pool. All guests at the Rodeo Drive hotel will have access to the pool at Luxe Sunset Boulevard with any booking.

Ever since he was a teenaged event manager in Melbourne, Australia, Wayne Fernandez has sought ways to work leaner, faster and bigger. Today he has dual roles as general manager of the Magic Box at the Reef, a downtown Los Angeles venue and small convention center with over 100,000 square feet of event space, and head of Curated Events, his event production company. Efficiency matters more than ever to him, and with his proprietary cost- and time-saving software, Exhibitor Management Tool, Fernandez is out to streamline how events are planned, managed and invoiced.
My dog Carlos and I celebrated the recent holiday weekend by taking a road trip to a trio of Kimpton properties in Southern California. I’m always happy when an invitation to check out a new property includes a “dog welcome” plus one. And I’m sure many dog owners attending corporate meetings are, too.
