In 2015, Joie de Vivre Hotels embarked on a $12 million renovation and repositioning of the beachfront property of what is now Monterey Tides in Monterey Bay, Calif. The hotel was transformed with colors, adobe texture and modern comforts, creating a coastal aesthetic.

The wraparound windows at The Lobster restaurant offer one of the most iconic views in all of Southern California: the Pacific Ocean and the historic Santa Monica Pier with its illuminated Ferris wheel. Now with a refurbished and contemporary redesign, the view from inside is pretty stellar, too. There are several options for group dining, from a private enclosed terrace that seats 50, an inside private dining room for up to 100, or a buyout of the entire restaurant, which accommodates 220 guests for a standing reception.
At the turn of the 20th century, the oceanfront town of Pacific City, which sat along what would become the Pacific Coast highway, would have been the perfect setting for a western by director John Ford. This photo was taken in 1904, the year the first pier opened and the community renamed itself Huntington Beach in honor of Henry E. Huntington, who brought the Pacific Electric Railway to the coast. Today, Pacific City is the name of a new 191,000-square-foot retail, dining and entertainment destination.
